PLACES to VISIT in Venice – Best Destinations
- Peggy Guggenheim collection: The paintings here chart the progress of 20th century art and it’s an awe inspiring tour. The works of Dali, Picasso, Miro displayed here make this an unbeatable collection.
- Basilica di San Marco: This is the mausoleum of the city’s patron saint, San Marco. With a Byzantine architecture, it’s a stunning building, a must visit.
- Palazzo Ducale: The home of the duke (‘doge’), this has a stunning Venetian-Gothic architecture, making for some dramatic facades.
Venice – TRAVEL TIPS
- Under all circumstances, book a room in advance. Sometimes Venice gets s crowded that visitors are turned away at the city’s periphery unless they have a hotel reservation.
- Buy hats, bonnets and sun screen the moment you land. The Venetian sun may feel milder in comparison to what you’re used to – but linger on and you’ll be burnt.
- All business establishments besides bars and restaurants will remain closed on Sundays so stock up on your shopping through the week. Most shops are open from Monday to Saturday from about 8am until 1 pm and from 4pm to 7pm.
BEST TIME to Visit Venice
April to June and September as well as October. The weather is pleasant at this time and Venice has a lesser number of tourists, making for some easy exploring. It will also be easier for you to find a hotel.

- Air: All major airlines operate from India to Rome, from where you can hop across to Venice.

Make sure you book your Venice accommodation in advance since finding a room can be a problem and you can get land up in a dingy hole with no other choice. Hotels here are more expensive than other Italian cities and you have to try hard to get that budget holiday. Try Cannaregio – the area around the station – for some cheap hotels.
