Somnath Beach: Gujarat at its Sandy Best
Somnath Beach, perhaps Gujarat’s best beach, is a pristine stretch of sand that is located quite near to the famous Somnath Temple. The beach is relatively clean and is well known for its clear and impeccable sunsets. It must, however, be noted that the beach infrastructure is not that well-developed; nevertheless, this is overshadowed by the beach’s beautiful geography and clean environs. On religious occasions, the beach is thronged by thousands of devotees, who come to take a dip in the sea water. Somnath has also emerged as a major centre for trading of handicrafts and regional clothing attires. One can buy bags, ghagra cholis (a certain type of decorative Indian dress) and other Western and Indian style clothes that feature intricate zari work, wall hangings and Patola silk items from Somnath.
Places to visit in Somnath
Perhaps the most important tourist destination near Somnath beach is the historically significant Hindu temple of Somnath, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This historical temple was in ancient times renowned for its wealth and treasures, and as such was always a juicy target for invaders. After repeated invasions, the temple lay in absolute ruins at the time of India’s partition. The present version of the temple was created in 1950 after prolonged efforts by Sardar Vallabhai Patel, one of India’s most prominent statesmen. Today, the temple is open for access to one and all and is an especially delightful sight on major Hindu festivals.
Somnath temple is among the most-visited Hindu pilgrimage sites and is considered to be one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in the world. Also located nearby is the Gir National Park, which is known all across the globe as the last home of the Asiatic Lion. The Gir National Park is considered by many to be among India’s best national parks and draws thousands of visitors who come to catch a glimpse of the elusive Asiatic lion. Some distance away from the pristine Somnath Beach is an ancient dock and port, which is still functional today. Though not historically significant, as the dock/port is completely recent, it is unique in that here, the vessels are made using wood and by hand.
