Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary: Nature’s Best
Located in the lush environs of the southern end of the Western Ghats, the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is a green’s delight and is one of India’s most prominent wildlife sanctuaries. One of the largest and most visited wildlife reserves in India, the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses the forest land between the Cheruthoni river and the Periyar river. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is considered to be one of best natural attractions of Kerela and stretches over the talukas of Udumpanchola and Thodupuzha of the Idukki district of Kerela. Known for its unique and diverse bio-life ecosystem, this wildlife sanctuary is spread across an area of 77 sq kms, with elevations ranging from 450 to 738 m above sea level.
Adjoining the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is the artificial reservoir/lake created by the three dams of Cheruthoni, Idukki and Kulamavu. Of these, perhaps the most famous is the Idukki Arch Dam. The vegetation in this wildlife sanctuary is largely ever-green and tropical deciduous.
The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many fine wild animals such as tigers, elephants, bears, wild boars, jungle cats, bisons and sambar wild dogs, and birds such as mynas, laughing thrushes, peafowls, black bulbuls, jungle fowls, kingfishers and woodpeckers. Besides, the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to many different types of snakes such as cobras, vipers and kraits, along with a number of non-poisonous varieties of snakes.

The three dams and the beautiful artificial lake are perhaps the most prominent tourist spots in this wildlife sanctuary. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is strategically located in the scenic state of Kerela. This sanctuary is located close to many tourist attractions of Kerela including the regions’ other wildlife sanctuaries, wildlife reserves and wildlife parks.

- Languages/ Cuisine: Malayalam and English are widely spoken in the region surrounding the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, and as such communication should not be a problem. Hindi, however, is somewhat less prevalent. Cuisine, however, would largely be local.
- Travel Tips: Wildlife photography and camping are highly recommended. Boat cruises on the artificial lake are also an excellent way to enjoy this wildlife sanctuary.

Best time to Visit Idukki
The best time to visit the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is between the months of October and June. Note that visiting the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary after heavy monsoons is somewhat likely to be less fun as the chances of good wildlife sightings are considerably low because the animals only come to the lake when water sources inside the forest have dried up.

- By Air: Kochi, located 70 odd kms away is the airport nearest to the Periyar Sanctuary. Kochi is one of India’s most prominent international airports, and as such flight connectivity is very good.
- By Rail: The nearest railhead too is Kochi.
- By Road: The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected to all the important cities in the region.
